Montessori Classroom

Type of School

We are a Montessori magnet school which is part of the Hartford Public School system. Montessori is “Education-for-Life”, promoting life-long learning! Montessori education has long been recognized around the world as a premier program committed to social reform and sustainability of the environment. The Montessori Method is taught in 22,000 schools and 125 countries.

Program Start Up

In 2009 our Montessori program started with two Primary classrooms housed in Moylan school.  Our program was established as a Hartford Magnet School on July 1, 2013.

Accreditation

Montessori Magnet seeks "recognition" through AMI/USA, an acknowledgment of the highest quality program implementation at both primary and elementary levels, AMI/USA recognition confirms that we function under the guidelines and standards of the Association Montessori Internationale (Amsterdam).

Location

We currently have two campuses located at Moylan School, 101 Catherine Street and McDonough School, 111 Hillside Avenue in Hartford, CT.

Facilities

At our Moylan campus we have 6 Primary classrooms, a family resource atrium, main office and garden beds in both our courtyard and playground. At our McDonough campus we have 4 Lower Elementary and 2 Upper Elementary classrooms, main office, resource room, playground, field and 5+ Garden beds. We also have shared spaces consisting of a gym, auditorium and cafeteria.

Enrollment

2016-2017 enrollment is aimed to be 300 students.

Pre-Kindergarten (age 3) to Grade 6.

Uniforms

  • The uniform is navy blue POLO – short or long sleeves, KHAKI shorts, pants or skort.
  • We do not use our school logo on our uniforms.
  • Cold weather classroom clothing (SWEATERS) must be solid navy blue.
  • Uniforms for trade are available at both campuses.

Diversity

Montessori Magnet students are from Hartford and from 36 surrounding towns and cities resulting in an excellent student enrollment across races, ethnicities and the economic spectrum.

Faculty/Staff

Montessori Magnet has 11 classrooms each with a Guide and an Assistant. We also have additional support staff including but not limited to; a Social Worker, Reading Coach, Common Core Coach, Reading Tutor, and an English Language Learner teacher.
12 Classroom teachers (guides) - all hold CT teacher educator certification, as well as Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) diplomas at the level they are working with.
Principal - holds CT teacher educator certification in Reading and Language Arts and elementary education, CT school administration, as well as Association Montessori Internationale Primary diploma
Montessori Magnet is staffed with support personnel to meet AMI standards. Classroom assistants hold at least an associate’s degree and AMI training. A School & Family Support Provider assists families. 
 

Arts

All classroom teachers are trained in the Montessori music curriculum. Additionally, Montessori Magnet partners with Hartford Performs through a Hartford Public Schools arts grant. Through Hartford Performs, practicing artists lead students through a range of art experiences, including puppetry, storytelling, dance, drama and musical instrument work. Efforts are made to integrate arts experiences during the work cycle.

Technology

Student Apple computer laptop access is available at the elementary level.
