Mission and History
MissionThe mission of Montessori Magnet (MM) is to offer a high-quality, public Montessori education program implemented to the highest standards set by Association Montessori Internationale for children between the ages of three and twelve (Pre-K3 – Grade 6). Montessori Magnet serves families in the greater Hartford region including students from 30 surrounding towns. Montessori Magnet is a racially, ethnically, and economically diverse school community deeply committed to realizing the inherent potential of all children. Students at Montessori Magnet will develop within themselves the power to shape their lives and the world around them.
We will grow to become a thriving educational institution accommodating children three to twelve years old. Hartford Public Schools is developing a complete Montessori Pathway of study. The Erdkinder, a land-based middle school for twelve to fifteen year olds, opened in 2014.
Maria Montessori’s integrated vision of social reform, fueled by service to the child, animates all aspects of our program. From our intensive approach of engaging families, to the beautiful, developmentally appropriate learning environment we create and maintain for all members of the community, we view education as an “aid to life” for every age. We believe that the purpose of education is to realize human potential, which enables transformative outcomes for individuals, families, and communities. That vision will be made visible in graduates who demonstrate strong capacities for creativity, adaptability, leadership, and compassion.
Montessori Magnet was founded in 2013. It is one of 21 magnet programs within Hartford Public Schools and one of 40 Interdistrict magnet schools. The vision of these magnet schools was born from the 1996 court settlement of Sheff vs. O’Neill that originated from Annie Fisher School student Milo Sheff against the then Connecticut Governor. A landmark civil rights case, the Sheff agreement strives to break down the barriers of racial and economic isolation of Hartford children and to provide integrated education for all. Driven by the Sheff vision, Montessori Magnet currently draws half of its student population from Hartford and half from thirty surrounding towns. The school offers a beautiful balance of backgrounds and ethnicities.
